I just wanted to share some useful information on learning new media tactics quickly to set yourself to hit the ground running.
I’ve had difficulty with talent -We were trying to hire for the business for the last 2 years and it was really difficult. Hiring was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Skillsets were really an issue. For example, a typical job requirement for an Online Marketing Manager to manage a product we help our clients monetize would NEED the following core skills:
- Understanding of how to drive traffic to web properties using paid and free sources, Pay Per Click, Search Engine Optimization, Social Media, Video Marketing
- Work with ad networks and website advertising sales to execute media buys to drive high targeted traffic.
- Market research skills using keyword research, google trends, competitive analysis of traffic and search engine rankings.
- Use of Analytics (Clicktracks or Google Analytics) and Market research on where we should be placing ads.
- Work with 3rd party sites to establish co-marketing opportunities and joint ventures.

While I don’t expect people to have experience in all of the above, I was not able to find anyone who can hit the ground running without teaching them from scratch in at least 4 areas in the above criteria. That takes up a whole lot of time and it becomes a bottleneck. Regardless of which agency or employer they came from, they had narrow skillsets – and most clients expected to show them the cutting edge. It was a cycle of ignorance until someone somewhere who knew better told them how they should be doing it!
We started that way too because -we had no one to learn from and had to learn the hard way and so we documented internally how we did things right so we could share and learn quickly.

Know Your Game Plan
Whether you’re serving clients or for your own business – You need to know what the end game is – are you driving traffic to get leads for yourself or a 3rd party, drive advertising revenue or really just create awareness?
Real Estate Plan (Building Your Site)
Building Your Site is like building real estate – you need to know what you’re using it for, is it a storefront, a storefront with a virtual warehouse, or a boutique?. Building a news site, a review site, a forum, a social network, a microblogging site or an ecommerce site are different skillsets as far as traffic driving strategy and content is concerned. Do something that is effortless – avoid overheads.
